Mending fences – a brief observation

To ‘mend fences’ means, according to The phrase finder, to ‘re-establish good relations with people one has disagreed with.’

I find, however, that in replacing our broken garden fences we are in fact moving to a closer relationship with our next door neighbours than we have ever had. In the past we never talked with them enough to disagree on anything.

Good fences may make good neighbours, but broken ones at least get neighbours talking and swapping quotes.
